1. The recent epidemic started in December 2013 in Guinea and spread to South Africa. By 8th April 2015, a total of 25515 cases have been reported with over 10000 deaths. Case fatality rate is about 70%.
2. Ebola virus mainly damage the immune system and blood. The blood coagulation pathway is affected. Other organs like liver are slightly affected.
As the blood clotting system is affected, there is uncontrolled bleeding. That is why it is also called Ebola hemorrhagic fever .
3. This virus is transmitted through direct contact with the blood ,organs,body secretion or other body fluids of infected animals like chimpanzee, gorillas, monkeys etc. Human to human transmission is through blood or body fluids of infected person.
