Hannah has preeclampsia. There is no cure for preeclampsia except delivery of the fetus.
What events in the reproductive tract contribute to preeclampsia?
Why did the problem only emerge at week 20 of pregnancy?
Why is delivery the only “cure”?
Pre eclampsia is characterised by high blood pressure and high
protein levels.
Poorly developed placenta results in impaired vascularisation. This
results in impaired perfusion which causes oxidative stress,
hypoxia. This results in pre eclampsia.
After 20 weeks of pregnancy increasing nutritional demand by the
fetus results in poorly developed placenta to
cause vascular endothelial malfunction and vasospasm.
This causes high blood pressure.
As the pre eclampsia occurs due to abnormal development of
placenta its removal is the only cure for pre eclampsia. So
delivering the baby and placenta is the necessary to avoid
complications.
