Diabetics often have poor wound healing from peripheral vascular disease which frequently results in ulcers and amputation. Based on what you know about the process of wound healing, why do you think this is so?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

In wound healing the flow of blood need to be increased after the clotting which will supply the nutrition, minerals and oxygen to the tissues that helps to heal the wound faster. But when the diabetes is uncontrolled, it affects the blood vessels by forming a plaque in the blood vessels that restrict the blood circulation. If the blood circulation is restricted to the wounded area then there will be a lack of nutrients, minerals and oxygen supply to the wound tissue. The oxygen supply to the bodily tissues is more important so if there is lack of oxygen, the area may go for necrosis. Without a proper blood flow there will be no oxygen supply to the wound tissues because blood carry the oxygen and nutrients.so it leads to poor wound healing, ulcer and amputation.

Background: 2. Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an inherited disease which results from the lack of the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH). The PAH enzyme catalyzes the first step in the degradation of Phe. In PKU patients, Phe accumulates and is eventually transaminated to phenylpyruvate. Excess phenylpyruvate accumulates in the blood and urine and has the effect of causing mental retardation if untreated. Screening programs identify PKU babies at birth, and treatment consists of a low Phe diet until maturation of the brain...
