The students in a practical lab were learning how to maintain length of the hip flexors by stretching. The instructor said that some of them were doing it correctly but others had not remembered the important concept they needed to be able to stretch the entire hip flexor. The instructor said, “The answer lies in their attachments.” What do you think the students were forgetting about the hip flexor muscle attachments?
They must have forgotten about the hip flexor muscles attachment with muscles of the lower back, pelvis and thigh bones. The iliopsoas muscle (Hip flexor muscles) attaches with the front of the lumbar vertebrae (lower back), also attaches with the inner side and along the pelvis and the at the top of the femur bone.
Thus, the correct stretching of the hip flexors should be felt at the front of the hip and not at the knee bone and back portion to avoid the tight hip flexor.
