write about the absorption and distribution of codeine drug in human body

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Codeine - This is a opioid drug.

This drug is used as analgesic which helps in relieving pain. This codeine is derived from poppy plant called papaver somniferum.

Absorption -

This drug is absorbed in GIT ( gastrointestinal tract). Bioavailability is about 50%. It can be used both in oral and parenteral route. Usage of this codeine drug parenterally leads to transmission of infectious disease such as hepatitis and HIV. This drug is mainly metabolized in liver where it undergoes O- demethylation to form morphine.

Distribution -

Apparent volume of distribution of codeine is about 3-6L/kg. Only about  7-25 % binds to plasma proteins. This drug has extensive distribution in to tissues. It can cross placental barrier and can enters breast milk can leads to teratogenic effects.

Suppose that it is known that an experimental drug lasts in a human body with a population standard deviation of 8 minutes. The kinetics of ethanol absorption in the human body followed by the metabolic oxidation of ethanol by the enzyme LADH (Liver Alcohol Dehydrogenase) can be mathematically described in terms of a consecutive reaction sequence of the type: A--k1-->B--k2-->C where the absorption step exhibits first order kinetics with a rate constant k1 and the metabolic oxidation exhibits zero order kinetics with a rate constant k2. absorption rates into the body are important considerations. When manufacturing a generic version of a brand-name drug. A pharmacist read that the absorption rate into the body of a new generic drug is the same as its brand name counterpart. She has a researcher friend of hers run a small experiment to determine of the mean absorption rates are different. The experiment had 17 participants in each group (generic vs. brand-name). the p-value for the test was 0.0030. what would...
