To regulate ventilation, peripheral chemoreceptors are responsible. These receptors are located chiefly in the carotid body and aortic body. In response, these receptors stimulate breathing in decreased pO2 while decrease breathing in increased pO2. These peripheral receptors sense the pO2 levels in the body. The decreased pO2 causes the peripheral chemoreceptors to induce hyperventilation while increased pO2 causes hypoventilation.
