What influences whether your immune system remembers if you have been exposed to an infectious agent or not?

Answer #1

The immune system functions to detect and destroy foreign antigens in order to protect the body from infections.

  • When a foreign antigen / pathogen arrives in the body for first time it is said to be primary exposure.
  • B lymphocytes produce antibodies against it and destroys it.
  • During this, B cells turn into memory cells that remembers the antigen.
  • When the same antigen re-enters the body, immunological memory initiates secodnary immune response.
  • This response is much quick and and the antibodies bind to antigens with greater affinity.
  • The effect is prolonged and much effective as compared to the primary immune response.

Hence, memory cells influence the immune system to remember an infectious agent.

Based on what you know about the immune system, EXPLAIN WHY a defect in the gene encoding AIRE would result in a loss of tolerance to self-antigens. What is the function of AIRE? At what stage is it involved in immune development? If AIRE is defective, what are the consequences for the immune system? Be clear and specific!

Vaccines act by offering attenuated forms of pathogens to be recognized by the host immune system. Once exposed, the immune system develops specific defenses (acquired response) against that pathogen, so that in the future, vaccinated individuals that get into contact with the true pathogen will already possess the necessary immune response to fight off the disease. In the case of viruses, the attenuated version of the pathogen is usually composed of viral proteins without its genetic material (in other words,...

Q1. Assume that what you have learned about the immune system is applicable to mice. Suppose that you have two mice, A and B: Mouse-A: was infected with an intracellular pathogen known as pathogen X Mouse-B: was infected with both the intracellular pathogen (pathogen X) and anti-IL-2 antibodies. Mouse-A and mouse-B, became ill because of the infection with this pathogen. However, mouse-A was able to recover, but mous Q1. Assume that what you have learned about the immune system is...

Some biologists have criticized the traditional analogy of the immune system to an army, arguing that it is unnecessarily militaristic. They have proposed other analogies that compare immune functioning to gardening or housekeeping. Develop one of these or create your own analogy for immune function and describe the roles of helper T-lymphocytes, cytotoxic T-lymphocytes, and B-lymphocytes using language that fits your metaphor. Preferably using the gardening or housekeeping analogy.
