Assessment of Asthma: To test for asthma, clinicians commonly use a peak flow meter. Discuss how this test works. What specific lung volume and/or capacity is being measured? What is a normal reading? What would constitute an abnormal reading?
Peak flow meter is a portable device which is used to measure how well the lungs are able to expel air.
The patient is asked to blow a quick blast of air through a mouthpiece at the end of the device .The peak flow meter measures the force of air in litres per minute and it is shown on the scale which is built in on the device.Peak flow meter measures peak expiratory flow which is measured in litres per minute.
The normal reading in a peak flow meter is between 400 and 700 litres per minute. If the peak flow reading is less than 50 % of the personal best of the patient it is abnormal and needs immediate medical action.
