The retina consists of photoreceptor cells i.e cones and rods. The top area of rods and cones consists of discs which are bound to membrane. This consists of proteins bound to chromophore 11 cis. When light strikes this chromophore then Isomerization takes place which changes the molecular arrangement of 11 cis to 11 trans.

Rods adapts slowly and cones adapts fastly when when one comes to dark from bright light because rods are more sensitive to light and the pigments in rods takes time to regenerate and hence takes more time to reach maximum sensitivity. Whereas cones adapts to dark in few minutes.
