Laurie was in a car accident over the weekend. While she suffered some external injuries, the doctors are also worried about internal bleeding and are preparing to give her blood. Based on what you have learned in class, discuss how Laurie’s body will begin to repair it’s self and specifically the role that her blood will play. Additionally, consider what the doctors will be concerned about if they need to give her some blood.
Internal bleeding indicates release of blood from internal injuries which cannot be observed directly. Internal bleeding is determined by symptoms and tests. Once the internal bleeding is determined, blood transfusion becomes important because continued loss of blood may result into hypovolemia and may ultimately results into low blood pressure. In addition sufficient amount of blood is required to heal the injuries. Blood play a major role in healing as blood contain platelets and many clotting factors including vitamin K which causes a clot formation at the site of injury to start the process of healing. Blood contains various immune cells which protects the injuries from infection.
