A seven year-old boy is brought to the office because of “pink eye”. He was sent home from school by the school nurse because his right eye was red. When he woke up in the morning his other eye was red as well. His eyes were runny but no pus. He has a mild head cold with a runny nose and a mild sore throat. On examination he has bilateral conjunctivitis with clear drainage. No crusting of the lashes is seen, and the corneas are clear. He has mildly tender adenopathy. The remainder of his examination is unremarkable.
This 7 year old boy with Pink eye is having Viral Conjunctivitis.
Viral conjunctivitis - is highly infectious condition causing conjuctivitis usually casused by adenovirus. Viral conjuctivitis involves bilatral eyes.
Mother also got pink eye is s/o highly contageous nature of this conjuctivitis.
Symptoms include Mild headache, runinng nose, watering from eye, swelling near eye & sore throa.
It needs only symptomatic treatment. Frequent cleaning of eye with sterile water with clean cotton pad, cold compression may be given. It usually resolves on its own in a couple of week. Hence, such patients need to be isolate.
