You are presented with a patient with O blood type and a donor with AB blood type. What would happen if you transfuse whole blood from the donor to the patient? What would happen if you transfused only plasma? (assume compatible Rh blood)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

O blood group :-antibodies are anti A and anti B No antigens are present

AB blood group:-antigens are A and B and no antibodies are present

When whole blood from AB donor is given to O blood group(recipient) antibodies anti A and B in recipient blood will act on the antigens A and B present on the rbc of donor so clumping occurs and this will cause transfusion reaction

But when only plasma is transfused as there are no antibodies in plasma of donor(AB) there will no clumping and no transfusion reaction in such case
