describe all phases of mitosis step by step and briefly explain what is happening at each step.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Phases of mitosis:

1. Prophase

  • Condensation of chromosome
  • Movement of centrosome
  • Formation of mitotic spindle
  • Begning of nucleoli break down

2. Metaphase

  • Chromosome line up at metaphase plate
  • Chromosome are attached to centrosome by mitotic spindle

3. Anaphase

  • Sister chromatids seperate
  • Sister chromayids move to opposite poles

4. Telophase

  • Sister chromatids reach opposite pole
  • Nuclear envelop forms
  • Chromosome unfolds back to chromatin
  • Nucleoli reappear

Tophase is then followed by cytokinesis, which is the division of cytoplasm. After cytokinesis two daughter cells separate. Absence or failure of cytokinesis lead to multinucleated condition.
