How does the anatomy of the digestive systems of the sheep and the pig reflect the respective diets of these animals?
What is the function of the reticular (esophageal) groove? (pig and sheep)
Thank you!
The digestive system of pigs is monogastric and are non ruminant, that is one stomach will be present same like human and are non ruminants.Where as in case of sheep they are polygastric and are ruminants.
Diet in Pigs : Pigs are omnivores. So that they can eat both animal and plant food.
Diet in Sheep : Sheep are herbivores and they eat a large variety of green plants. They mostly eat seeds, and grass and also most of the herbivores are Ruminants and also like all herbivores they had multi chambered stomach which easily digest the cellulose that is present in plants.
Reticular grove serve as bypass between oesophagus and also ambosum. This takes part in all motor functions of the stomach. This especially works best in Ruminants. The reticular grove has no function in Non Ruminants.
