What can be found embedded within the plasma membrane?

What can be found embedded within the plasma membrane?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Plasma membrane is composed of phospholipid bilayer with proteins embedded in it. There are three kinds of proteins embedded in the plasma membrane:

  • Integral membrane proteins are presents within the lipid bilayer. These can be either transmembrane in nature traversing throughout the membrane or remain embedded within the membrane. These are usually permanently attached to the membrane.
  • Perpheral membrane proteins that are associated temporarily to the lipid bilayer or to the other integral proteins.
  • Lipid anchored proteins which are located on the cell surface attached to the lipids embedded with the plasma membrane.

The density of the plasma membrane of a cell was found to be 1.06 g/mL. If the density of the lipid component is 0.90 g/mL and the density of the protein component is 1.36 g/mL, what is the percent composition (to the nearest ones) of the lipid component of the membrane, assuming the plasma membrane consists only of the lipid and protein components? NBFD is a ligand-gated ion channelthat is found in the plasma membrane of many amoeba. NBFD binds foodand triggers phagocytosisby mediating the opening of Ca2+channels in the cell’s plasma membrane. NBFD was mutated such that the sequence of one of the transmembrane domains changed from LVISLIVESMVWLQEAVLEQLLItoHTLDFLSNKYMTYGGRIDKMSP. Would this change the ability of the protein to function normally? Provide details to support your answer
