Plasma membrane is composed of
phospholipid bilayer with proteins embedded in it. There are three
kinds of proteins embedded in the plasma membrane:
- Integral membrane proteins are
presents within the lipid bilayer. These can be either
transmembrane in nature traversing throughout the membrane or
remain embedded within the membrane. These are usually permanently
attached to the membrane.
- Perpheral membrane proteins that
are associated temporarily to the lipid bilayer or to the other
integral proteins.
- Lipid anchored proteins which are
located on the cell surface attached to the lipids embedded with
the plasma membrane.
