Describe the importance of the agonist / antagonist structure found in skeletal muscles. Please provide detail and include at least one example.
* There are many muscles involves in the action of the skeletal muscle but principal muscle involved is called prime mover or agonist. To lift a cup biceps brachii is actually a prime mover. However it is assisted by brachialis which acts as synergist. A synergist is a fixator muscle assists in movement of prime mover.
* The muscle with opposite action to the prime mover is called as antagonist. It maintain body or limb position such as standing erect. This antagonist muscle also helps in control of rapid movement.
* Example:- Movement of forearm.
Agonist:- Biceps brachii in the anterior compartment of arm helps to flexes it.
Antagonist:- Triceps brachii in the posterior compartment of arm helps to extend the forearm.
