Restricted Airflow

2. What happens to air flow as the tube radius decreases? How does this affect lung volume and

respiratory rate? Give 2 examples of diseases that would cause a change in tube radius.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

When the tube radius decreases it causes obstruction is air flow and decreases the rate of flow of air.It reduces the amount of air inhaled in each breath and the oxygen that reaches the pulmonary arteries. It affect the FEV1 and FVC of lungs ,total lung capacity remain unaffected,.due to narrowing of air passage the resistance to air flow is increased thus the FEV1 is decreased and FVC is also decreased.Respiratory rate will increase due to insufficient elimination of CO2 from the body .

Examples of the Dieseases which decreases the radius of tube are
Obstructive lung diseases :(1) Bronchial Asthma

(2) COPD

(3) Bronchiectasis

A 5-m-long cylinder of solid aluminum has a radius of 2 cm. (a) If the cylinder is at a temperature of 5 °C, how much will the length change when the temperature rises to 30 °C? (b) Due to the temperature increase, by how much would the density of the aluminum cylinder change? The density decreases by % upon heating. c) By what percentage does the volume of the cylinder increase? The volume increases by % upon heating.

Two identical sealed containers (1 and 2) are connected to one another by a narrow tube with a valve. Initially, the valve is closed, container 1 is filled with a fluid, and container 2 is empty. Both containers have a ruler taped to their sides in order to measure the height of any fluid they contain. A) . When the valve is opened for a time interval Δt, the level of the fluid in container 1 drops by 3 cm....

2). V1=1000l P1=2bar t1=15C How does the pressure and density change when the air is slowly compressed to 1/5 th of the original volume? Isothermal process. 3). V1 = 1000L P1= 1bar t1= 15C is quickly compressed to 1/5th of original volume, assuming the process is isenthropic. after the initial compression air is cooled back to the original 15C, how does the pressure and density change? Isochoric process.

An air-cooled steam condenser is operated with air in cross flow over a square, in-line array of 400 tubes (NL=NT= 20), with an outside tube diameter of 20 mm and longitudinal and transverse pitches of SL= 60 mm and ST= 42 mm, respectively. Saturated steam at a pressure of 2.455 bars enters the tubes, and a uniform tube outer surface temperature of Ts= 390 K may be assumed to be maintained as condensation occurs within the tubes.
