Explain the relationship between tidal volume and respiratory rate and its effects on ventilation during from rest to submaximal exercise through maximal effort.
Tidal volume is the amount of air which we normally inhale or exhale. The respiratory rate is the number of times we inhale or exhale which means respiratory rate is the number of times tidal volume is taken in a minute. During test we breath normally with a tidal volume of 500 ml and for adults the respiratory rate is 12-20 breaths per minute at rest. Minute ventilation is the multiplied value of tidal volume and respiratory rate. During submaximal exercise the need of oxygen increase so the diaphragm and other respirairatory muscles work in collaboration which leads to increase in tidal volume and the respiratory rate also increases. This may depend upto the individual. As both the value increases minute ventilation also increases.
