Homework Answers

Answer #1

The two pathways by which an individual can develop intermediate or ambiguous genitalia.

  • XY -> Functional SRY gene -> Testes determining factor produced -> Testes develop -> Woflian ducts develop into male reproductive tract -> non-functional 5 alpha reductase -> testosterone is not converted to DHT -> External genitalia can appear female or ambiguous
  • XX -> no SRY gene -> no testes determining factor or antimullerian hormone -> mullerian tubes differentiate into uterine tubes, uterus, upper 1/3 of birth canal -> hormoneally atypical -> adrenal glands over produce androgens -> congenital adrenal hyperplasia -> genitalia are intermediate.
