Meninges are the covering of brain and spinal cord. They play a very important role in maintaining central nervous system There are basically three layers of meninges:
1. Duramater: it is the outermost covering, tough in nature. It is thick and dense made up up irregular connective tissue
2. Arachnoid: It is located beneath the duramater. It is delicate and fibrocellular in nature. It is derived from the neural crest of mesoectoderm in the embryo.
3. Piamater: it is firmly adheres to brain and spinal cord. It is made up of thin fibrous tissue. Piamater is permeable to water and solutes . It nourishes brain by allowing blood vessels to pass through it.
