Progesterone is a steroid hormone. It is secreted by corpus luteum which is a temporary endocrine gland that the female body produces during second half of the menstrual cycle.
FUNCTION : progesterone prepares the endometrium for pregnancy after ovulation. It decreases the estrogen receptors and induces conversion of endometrium from proliferative to secretive face, suppresses menstruation and contraction of uterus.
When there is no fertilization corpus luteum degenerates forming corpus albicans.
