Answer #1

Answer

In males,

The end of step of gametogenesis (spermatogenesis) results in formation 4 haploid sperm cells.

  • All four sperms are fully functional and capable of fertilizing the oocyte.
  • They are haploid with 23 chromosomes.

In females,

The end of step of gametogenesis (oogenesis) results in formation 1 haploid seconday oocyte and 3 polar bodies.

  • Meiosis I of primary oocyte produces one seondary oocyte and one polar body.
  • Meiosis II of secondary oocyte produces one mature ovum and one polar body.
  • The polar body that resulted from meiosis I also undergoes meiosis II to produce two polar bodies.
  • Hence, the end result is one fully functional ovum and 3 polar bodies.
  • The 3 polar bodies are non functional and cannot be fertilized by a sperm.

An experiment is conducted to compare the starting salaries of male and female college graduates who find jobs. Pairs are formed by choosing a male and a female with the same major and similar grade point averages. Suppose a random sample of 10 pairs is formed in this manner and the starting annual salary of each person is recorded. The differences within the pairs are obtained by subtracting the female salary from the male salary. The following results are obtained:...

Assume that the results of a yes/no survey question given to a random sample of male and female subjects are summarized in a 2×2 two-way table. Use the given values of the test statistic and the significance level to test for independence between gender and response. Given a test statistic of chi squaredχ2 equals=3.93.9 and a significance level equals=0.01, decide whether gender and response are related or not related.

A marketing study was conducted to compare the mean age of male and female purchasers of a certain product. Random and independent samples were selected for both male and female purchasers of the product. It was desired to test to determine if the mean age of all female purchasers exceeds the mean age of all male purchasers. The sample data is shown here: Female: n = 10, sample mean = 50.30, sample standard deviation = 13.215 Male: n = 10,...

A physiologist wishes to compare the effects of two concentrations of muscle relaxant on the quadriceps muscle in long-distance male runners. After acquiring ethical clearance, the researcher randomly selects 30 female long-distance runners (LDR) from a national list that included all male and female registered LDRs. The researcher later marks a 7mm long muscle on the thigh (the rectus femoris which occupies the middle of the thigh) of each study participant and injects the higher concentration (in the marked muscle area) to...
