Describe the cellular mechanism of :
Electrical activities of the pancreatic beta cells that lead to insulin secretion.
Whenever the blood glucose levels are high, it is sensed by the pancreatic beta cells and secretes insulin. The mechanism is when there is high blood glucose, it is entered into the pancreatic beta cell and it is metabolized to form ATP. The ATP thus formed closes the potassium channel on the beta cell. This causes decreased efflux of potassium and leads to cell depolarisation. Cell depolarisation leads to opening of calcium channels on the beta cells and the calcium binds to the vesicles in which insulin is stored. This leads to disruption of the vesicles and the release of insulin into the blood.
