  • In androgen insensitivity syndrome, the person contains male genes (X and Y chromosomes) but exibit characteristics (phenotype) of a female.
  • Due to presence of Y chromosomes, the do contain testes but they does not descend and remians in inguinal canal.
  • There is absence of internal reproductive organs of a female (uterus, fallopian tubue, ovaries) as the person contains male genotype.
  • The receptors in the body are unresponsive to androgens (testosterone).
  • Testosterone is hormone produced by interstiital cells in testes that promotes growth of secondary sexual characteristics in males.
  • Due to insensitivity to testosterone, the peniis remain small even after puberty.
  • Due the presence of maternal estrogens in the person, certain feminine traits such as breast development occurs.
