A 55-kg man trains on a cycle ergometer by pedaling at 60 rpm against a resistance of 1.5 kg. What is his absolute VO2?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans:

Metabolic equation for VO2 in leg cycling  = Vertical Component + Horizontal Component + Resting Component

Vertical Component = (1.8 x Workrate) / Body Mass (kg)

Horizontal Component = 3.5 mL/kg/min

Resting Component = 3.5 mL/kg/min

Now, Workrate = 1.5 (resistance/kg) x 6 (revolution distance/m) x 60 (pedalling frequency/rpm) = 540 kg/m/min

Vertical Component = (1.8 x 540) / 55 = 17.67 mL/kg/min

Therefore, Relative VO2 = Vertical Component + Horizontal Component + Resting Component

= 3.5 + 3.5 + 17.67 = 24.67 mL/kg/min

and Absolute VO2 = (24.67 x 55 kg)/ 1000 = 1.36 L/min

Absolute VO2 = 1.36 L/min

You have a client with elevated cholesterol levels (LDL = 155 mg/dl, triglycerides = 168 mg/dl) and other CVD risk factors. According to the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) your client should expend at least 200 kcal per workout. You are aiming for your client to expend 250 kcal during their next workout on a stationary cycle ergometer. You want the workout to be completed in 45 minutes. Assume that the gross mechanical efficiency (GME) of your client during the...

A 51 year old has picked up cycling as a hobby. He is 6’1” tall and 195 pounds. You have him cycling on a Monark cycling ergometer (6 meters per revolution). If you started at 60 rpm with 3 kg of resistance and added 0.5 kg every 3 minutes while he maintains 60 rpm and he failed after 12 minutes and 5 seconds. What would you predict his VO2max to be? 29.9 ml/kg/min 31.3 ml/kg/min 36.4 ml/kg/min 39.9 ml/kg/min
