Answer #1

a. Attacking and destroying pathogens.

Skin is a dynamic organ which prevents pathogens from entering the body by providing a waterproof, mechanical barrier. The elements of skin contain components of innate and adaptive immune system which are activated in case the barrier is breached and the pathogen enters. Epidermis, a layer of skin consists of langerhans dendritic cells which recognize the pathogen and present it to T lymphocytes to trigger the inflammatory response. Skin contains components for both innate and adaptive immune system and hence provides immunity by attacking and destroying pathogens.
