• Describe the tissue layers that make up the uterus and their functions
The uterus is made up of an external layer of myometrium which is made up of smooth muscles and an internal layer known as endometrium. The smooth muscles of myometrium helps the uterus to expand and contract during childbirth. The uterus is connected to the body lining by perimetrium which is a thin layer of tissue made up of epithelial cells. The perimetrium keeps uterus in its place. The endometrium is made up of three layers i.e stratum compactum, stratum spongiosum and stratum basalis. Stratum spongiosum makes up the stratum functionalis. The endometrium has menstrual and reproductive functions as it is made of simple columnar epithelial tissue with exocrine glands and also has vascular connective tissue that gives support to the developing embryo during pregnancy.
