Most of the 4th ventricle is located near 'colourful' structures such as the pons, the medulla and the cerebellum, all part of the hindbrain.

The brain is divided into three parts - forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain. Hindbrain is lower part of brainstem comprising pons, medulla and cerebellum.

Pons : Links medulla and thalamus

Medulla : Continues posteriorly with spinal cord and contains centres controlling involuntary vital functions.

Cerebellum : Portion of brain that is in back of head between cerebrum and brainstem and control voluntary and involuntary movement as well as balance.
