The primary lymphoid tissue is the site where lymphocytes are developed from progenitor cells into matured lymphocytes. They provides environment for stem cells for their division and maturation into B and T cells. It is the main site for all the lymphocyte progenitor cells to reside and differentiate.

The two primary lymphoid tissue are the red bone marrow and the thymus gland. The red bone marrow is the place where red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets arise. The thymus gland is the small organ located behind the breastbone and it functions in both immune and endocrine systems.
