It is define as the pain is perceived at the adjacent or different location instead of painful stimuli location. It is also known as reflective pain. Pain is felt at a distant from the site of origin.

For example

1. Kehler’s sign – pain is perceived at the shoulder blade but

affected area is spleen.

2. Cardiac pain- pain is perceived at upper chest/ left limb but the

affect area of pain is heart.

3. Liver and gallbladder- pain is perceived at right tip of scapula

the affected area is liver and gallbladder.

4. Gastrointestinal- pain is perceived at umbilicus

The affected area is appendix or small intestine.

5.phantom limb pain

Knowledge of referred pain is important for clinical point of view for the differential diagnosis of disease.
