How do changes in calcium/phosphate metabolism in bone contribute to a decline in our skeletal system as we age
The calcium/ phosphate metabolism in bone is important for the maintainance of skeletal mineralization in skeletal system. The calcium helps in regulating the parathyroid hormones system and vitamin D which acts upon bone ,gastrointestinal tract and kideny , as a result into increase in blood calcium and reduces the bone resorption. The phorsphorus is present in the form of hydroxyapatite in the bone, and it gets reabsorbed at the duodenum portion of the small intestine and utilizes the calcium dependent or independent mechamism to function. The ageing causes the disbalance between bone formation and bone resorption due to changes in the calcium/phosphate metabolism. These changes results into bone cortices to become narrower and reduces the resistance to bending and buckling.
