Your patient presents with the following lab values:
pH 7.28
HCO3 20mEq/L
K+ 5.7
Vital signs are as follows: Temperature: 99.0 F
Pulse: 100
Respirations: 25
Blood pressure: 90/50mmHg
What condition does your patient present with? Discuss causes and potential treatments for this condition. cite references using APA format.
Conditions of the patient is Metabolic acidosis.
Because the pH is acidic and HCO3 level is low.H+ is excreted in place of K+ while exchange with Na+ absorption from distal convoluted tubule. So H+ is high which causes hyperexcitability of cell, which causes increases the heart rate and increase the pulse.
Causes-
Liver failure
Trauma
Excessive alcohol intake
Heart failure
In severe Anemia
Prolonged lack of oxygen from shock.
Treatment;
Hyperkalemia; Combination of IV insulin and dextrose lowers the serum potassium levels .
Metabolic acidosis: IV sodium bicarbonate is given.
