Do neurons in the left auditory nerve make their connections in the right cochlear nucleus, left cochlear nucleus, or both?
The auditory nerve carries the auditory impulses from the ear to
the auditory cortex.
The auditory arises from the bipolar cells of the cochlea. The
nerve then ascends to the brainstem and makes the first synapse at
the cochlear nuclei of the same side. After that the nerve crosses
the midline and synapses with superior olivary complex of the other
side. Then the nerve travels to the inferior colliculus and then to
the medial geniculate body of thalamus. From thalamus the nerve
passes to the auditory cortex where the processing of impulse
occurs.
The auditory nerve makes connection to the cochlear nucleus of the
same side. Therefore left auditory nerve will make connections with
left cochlear nucleus.
