Quadriceps femoris is a group of muscles which consists of four muscles –

1. the rectus femoris
2. the vastus lateralis
3. the vastus medialis
4. the vastus intermedius

These muscles are located in the anterior compartment of the thigh

All four muscles have different origin, Insertions of all four are in the tuberosity of the tibia (via the patellar ligament) and Innervation by Femoral nerve

The action of these muscles are –

• for Hip joint: Thigh flexion (Thigh flexion is done by rectus femoris only)
• for Knee joint: Leg extension.
