Antibiotics known to cause ototoxicity( toxicity to the ear) are gentamycin, Furosemide etc.

The connection behind the toxic effect on mechanoreceptors resulting in hearing loss is as follows:-

  • Toxic effect of an antibiotic on mechanoreceptors causes infection and inflammation.
  • This inflammation inturn causes ion channels of sensory hair cells of ear to increase permeability to the drug.
  • This results in more of the cells of cochlea to uptake the drug .
  • Thus resulting in hearing loss.
