Processes of the formation of atheroma in atherosclerosis

Homework Answers

Answer #1
  • A fully developed atherosclerotic lesion is called Atheroma.
  • Unlike fatty streaks,Atheroma are selective in different geographic locations and races and are seen in advanced age.
  • Atheroma lesions may develop from progression of early lesion of the atherosclerosis.
  • Most often and most severly affected is the abdominal aorta, though smaller lesion may be seen in descending thoracic aorta and aortic arch.
  • The major branches of the aorta around the ostia are often severly involved, especially yhe iliac, femoral, carotid, coronary and cereberal arteries.
  • The process of atherogenesis are endothelial dysfunction,Formation of lipid layer, migration of leukocytesand smooth muscle cells into the cell wall, foam cell formation, degradation of extracellulae matrix.

10. An investigator determines the correlation coefficient between triglyceride levels and degree of atherosclerosis in sampled blood vessels to be +1.67. On the basis of this information, you would conclude that: Triglyceride level is a good predictor of atherosclerosis. High triglyceride levels cause atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis causes high levels of triglyceride. The investigator has incorrectly determined the correlation coefficient.
