What is the significance of the threshold potential in the generation of an all or none action potential?
Threshold potential is the voltage level in the membrane potential at which rapid opening of voltage gated ion channels open resulting in depolarization and geeneration of the action potential.
This threshold voltage level opens large amount of voltage gated ion channels, and hence action potential is generated. when the membrane is unable to reach this threshold potential, then voltage gated channels remain closed and hence No action potential could be generated.
Hence for the generation of the action potential. membrane potential needs to reach the threshold potential in order to cause opening of the voltage gated channels.
