Pathway of codeine drug in the body:

• The main pathway for the metabolism of codeine occurs in the liver. About 50-70% of codeine is converted to codeine-6-glucuronide.
• Codeine can be usually taken in 15mg to 60mg.
• It is taken four times a day.
• One or two 30mg tablets of codeine are taken to treat pain in adults.
• The enzyme which works with codeine is CYP2D6, as it metabolizes a quarter of codeine. This enzyme converts codeine to its active metabolite called morphine, which gives its analgesic effect.
• Codeine is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and it is distributed from the intravascular spaces to the tissues being uptaken by the liver, kidney and spleen.
• Codeine belongs to the class of opiod analgesics and is used for relieving mild to moderately severe pain.
