What is a diuretic and how briefly explain how it works?
Diuretic is a substance that produces diuresis,it causes increased production of urine. Diuretics increase excretion of water from body.
Three types of diuretics, they are loop diuretics, thiazides, potassium sparing diuretics.
Furosemide is loop diuretic it acts by inhibiting Na*-K*2Cl-Cotransporter in thick ascending limb of loop of henle,it causes sodium, potassium and chloride loss in urine.
Thiazide diuretic acts by inhibiting Na*-Cl-Symporter in distal convoluted tubule, thus inhibiting reabsorption of sodium and chloride.
Potassium sparing diuretics:They increases diuresis without loss of potassium, they act by interfering with sodium and potassium exchange in distal convoluted tubule.
