Hepatitis is the inflammmation of the liver. Various reasons contribute for hepatitis are alcohol, viral infections, auto-immune hepatitis, side effcts of drugs or toxication. It is associated with the elevation of both indirect and direct bilirubin into the bloodstream. The mechanism behind this elevation arises due to the disorder of direct bilirubin transport from hepatic cells to bile and block in thebile flow in intrahepatic bile ducts. It is characterized by increased level of transaminase (ALT, AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). There is a possible fecal discoloration and presence of bilirubin in the urine.
