Nonmyelinated axons:

A- conduct impulses more slowly than myelinated axons.

B- are thicker than myelinated axons.

C- occur in the PNS, but not in the CNS.

Answer #1

Both A & C are correct.

  • In myelinated axons, depolarization jumps from one node of Ranvier to the other and is called saltatory conduction and is faster than non-myelinated axons.
  • Myelinated axons are larger in diameter compared to non-myelinated axons due to myelin sheath around the axons.
  • Myelin sheath around axons in CNS are formed by oligodendrocytes and that around axons in PNS are formed by Schwann cells. However, some axons in PNS are not myelinated and are called non-myelinated axons which are not seen in CNS.
