Need to know answers to both A&B

A. Discuss the importance of the Octet Rule as if it pertains to the stability and reactivity of an atom.

B. Discuss ehat is meant by the acronym for the elements Hydrogenc Oxygen, Nitrogen, and Carbon as "HONC, 1, 2, 3, 4" and the significance of their valence electrons in chemical Reactions. (for example: oxygen can form one covalent bond, oxygen can form 2.) but so what?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

A. Octet rule = An element with 8 electrons in its valence shell exhibits high stability
Elements lose or gain electrons to obtain octet conformation.
Ex: Neon = 1s2 2s2 2p6
Na+ = 1s2 2s2 2p6
F- = 1s2 2s2 2p6

B. Hydrogen = 1s1
It can gain an electron to form 1s2 configuration. It can form both ionic as well as covalent bonds.

Oxygen = 1s2 2s2 2p4
It can gain two electrons to form octet configuration. It can form two covalent bonds.

Nitrogen = 1s2 2s2 2p3
It can gain three electrons to form octet configuration. It can form three covalent bonds.

Carbon = 1s2 2s2 2p2 = 1s2 2s1 2p3
It can gain four electrons to form octet configuration. It can form four covalent bonds.

In what way does the Lewis structure of BF3 appear to violate the octet rule? A)BF3 can react with NH3 to form a compound with a B—N bond for which the nitrogen provides both of the electrons. B)Experimental measurements suggest that the B—F bonds are unexpectedly short. C)To adhere to the octet rule, the Lewis structure of BF3 would require a formal positive charge on one of the electronegative fluorine atoms. D)In the simple Lewis structure of BF3 there are...
