It is a hormone secreted by the posterior pituitary gland.It is secreted as a result of negative feedback mechanism due to low water content in the body.

It stimulates water reabsorption by stimulating insertion if water channels into the membranes of kidney tubules.These channels transport soluble free water through tubular cells and back into blood leading to a decrease in plasma osmolarity and increased osmolarity of urine
