Case: Henry has climbed to the top of Mt. Apo. This is one of his bucket lists. Hence, to celebrate, he drinks 2 glasses of whiskey.

How will Henry's body regulate this acid-base imbalance?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Control for acid - base is buffers bicarbonate is the most important extracellular buffer, proteins are the intracellular buffers.

CO2 + H2O gives H2CO3 by carbonic anhydrase later H2CO3 disociates into H+ and HCO3- .

CO2 is regulated by lungs and H + is regulated by kidney.

Control for acid base balance in lungs is regulation of CO2 expired air.

Kidnes regulate the acid - base balance in our body by excreting hydrogen ions and generating bicarbonate ions this maintaining the blood pH.

In the above case Henry took 2 galsses of whisky this stimulates gastric acid secretion this secretion is neutralised by sodium bicarbonate in the dueodenum which is secreted by pancreas.

Increase in H+ ions removed by kidneys.
