How is fascia related to the muscles of the human body?
Fascia is a connective tissue sheath covering muscles which is made up of collagen fibres arranged in a wave like pattern. It has a great tensile strength, is stretchable and resist injury to the muscles.
Fascia surrounding muscles is known as deep fascia which is made up of dense fibrous connective tissue and elastin fibres. Fascia allows muscle group to stay connected with each other and bind muscles into group.
Example of deep fascia - fascia lata, Buck's fascia and plantar fascia etc
Functions of fascia -
a) it is highly stretchable , it resists injury to the muscles.
b) it covers the muscles and allows nerves and blood vessels to pass through it and prevents them from injury while muscle contraction.
c) It reduces friction during muscle contraction.
