Marcus was also a passenger on the bus involved in the crash. When paramedics arrived on the scene, he was unconscious, with cuts on his arms, face, and scalp. He regained consciousness en route to the hospital but paramedics noted that he had difficulties with his speech and motor function. A head CT scan revealed an extensive subarachnoid haemorrhage. Surgery to remove large clots from the subarachnoid space was performed immediately.

Where is the subarachnoid space relative to the other meningial layers?

Think about each of the different tissues that would have to be disrupted during surgery to get to the clot in order to remove it (from the outside in)?

Where is the subarachnoid space relative to the other meningeal layers?

The space between the arachnoid matter and the pia matter is the subarachnoid space. This space is filled with Cerebro spinal fluid which act as a cushion for the brain and spinal cord.

Think about each of the different tissues that would have to be disrupted during surgery to get to the clot in order to remove it (from the outside in)?

  1. Scalp skin-Evacuation surgery can make disturbance to the connective tissue, epicranial aponeurosis, loose areolar tissue and pericranium of scalp skin
  2. Bone(Connective tissues) -making burr hole for craniotomy will make disturb the bone .
  3. Meningeal layer disturbance from dura mater(connective tissue) into the dural venous sinus and fibrous tissues in the arachnoid matter.
