Question: Why can atropine be used for treatment of gastrointestinal spasm?
Answer: Atropine is a drug that is used to treat many disorders. Atropine falls in the Anticholinergic class of drugs. Atropine blocks the action of acetylcholine which is a neurotransmitter and it helps with the movement of impulses between cells. Usually what happens is when the acetylcholine works on the receptors it leads to the involuntary contraction of muscles present in the gut which further causes a spasm. Atropine prevents acetylcholine to bind with the receptor and hence prevents the contraction from relieves the symptoms of gastrointestinal spasm.
