What is a sarcomere? What is a Z disc? Diagram the structure of the A band and I band of a pair of sarcomeres. Which myofilaments are in each band?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Sarcomere:

Sarcomere is defined as the structural and functional unit of skeletal muscle. It is also called as basic contractile unit of muscle.

Z disk:

In the sarcomere I band is divided into two portion by the means of dark and narrow line. This line is called Z line it is also called as Z disk. It is formed by protein disk.

Myofilaments in I band and A band:

Myofilaments consist of myofibrils which is made up of proteins the two main myofilaments present in the sarcomere are

1. Actin

2. Myosin

The myofilament present in the I band is Actin. It is thin filament

The myofilament present in the A band is both Actin and Myosin.
