Answer #1

During stress the level of cortisol is increased in the blood to fulfill the requirements of the situation. The main role of cortisol is to increase the blood glucose level as more energy is required during stressed situation. Cortisol have also effect on immune system, digestive system and reproductive system.

The release of cortisol is regulated by hypothalamus where cortici tropin releasing hormone (CRH) is released in response to stress. CRH acts on pituitary gland to release adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). ACTH stimulates adrenal gland to release cortisol. The combined system of CRH-ACTH-cortisol release is considered as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (or HPA axis).

Description The Hypothalamic-Pituitary Axis is responsible for a wide variety of normal physiologic functions. It is essential to have a firm understanding of how the normal feedback loop works in order to understand alterations involving the Hypothalamic-Pituitary Axis. The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate understanding of the normal feedback regulation of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary Axis and recognition of alterations in normal regulation. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis includes corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) from the hypothalamus, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from the pituitary, and cortisol from the adrenal gland. In this system, CRH stimulates the release of ACTH, which stimulates the release of cortisol that exerts a negative feedback effect on both CRH and ACTH. Until only recently, there was no good tool to measure serum ACTH. Therefore, to evaluate whether pathologically high cortisol was related to ACTH, the “Dexamethasone suppression test” was invented. The elements...
