  • When the oxygenated blood approaches muscle cells, there is loosening of the bond between oxygen and hemoglobin.
  • As the RBC moves through capillaries (which surrounds muscle cells) there is release of oxygen from hemoglobin which is diffused into muscle cells.
  • The Bohr effect permits increased uploading of oxygen in tissues. An increase in the activity of skeletal muscles causes an increased partial pressure of carbon dioxide which tend to decrease local blood pH
